The Best ATVs and 4-Wheelers

The popularity of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) has skyrocketed in recent years, with one sub-type of ATV gaining more friction in the market than all others: the ATV. 4-wheelers are the ideal choice of vehicle in a wide number of scenarios, whether it’s ranching, hunting, trail-riding, racing, having fun with the kids, or just scooting around the farm to locations that are inaccessible in a standard, full-size vehicle. Although they can vary greatly in terms of specs, speed, size, power, and intended use, what nearly all 4-wheelers have in common is reams of practicality, fun, and the ability to go where the vast majority of vehicles wouldn’t dare.

But with all those new models of 4-wheeler now flooding the market, how are we to choose which one will be best for our needs? We reviewed dozens of ATVs and 4-wheelers to identify the best of the best. We examined a range of factors, including intended use, handling, engine size, transmission type, and average customer reviews.

Who Should Buy an ATV

The number of uses to which you can put an ATV is simply vast, from recreation, hunting, fishing, ranching, trail-riding, racing, riding around the farm, or simply having fun with the kids. As such, one of the most appealing characteristics of ATVs is their versatility. While this is equally true of other all-terrain vehicles (dirt bikes and dune buggies, for example), what makes 4-wheelers particularly attractive and practical is how easy they are to operate, their ability to carry or tow cargo, and their ability to tackle testier terrain.

Important Features to Consider

ATVs should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting an ATV for your off-road riding:

  • Engine power. The engine power of any 4-wheeler has the greatest bearing on its speed and appropriate user weight. This is measured in cubic centimeters (cc). Most versions on the market have engines ranging from 100cc-300cc. In short, the higher the number, the more powerful the engine will be.
  • Transmission. All 4-wheelers use one of two transmission types—manual or automatic. Both types of transmission have their pros and cons. Manual transmission increases driver involvement and can give the user more control over the vehicle, particularly when driving off-road, but is a little harder to master and thus not ideal for kids or younger users. Automatic transmission makes driving effortless but offers the driver a little less control, particularly when approaching bends or trying to negotiate testier terrain.
  • Max user weight. Most 4-wheelers provide a max user weight in the product description. While this is not always a set-in-stone limit, users near or above this weight will notice a decline in the vehicle’s power and max speed.
  • Drive modes. Many budget models of 4-wheeler do not have a reverse driving mode, which can make life particularly tricky if operating in tight spaces. Before buying, be sure to check your vehicle has a reverse mode if this features high on your list of priorities.
  • Clearance. For use on trails or around the farm, high clearance is important to avoid dings, bumps, and bangs on the underside of your vehicle. If you plan on using your 4-wheeler on particularly uneven or rocky terrain, we’d recommend opting for a model with at least 5 inches of clearance.
  • Safety features. A few safety features such as a speed-limiter and kill-switch can make your ATV far more child-appropriate and help to put parents’ minds at ease. Because even 4-wheelers designed for children can reach relatively high speeds, we’d also recommend that riders use a helmet at all times.
  • Shipping costs. When buying your ATV, be sure to check the shipping costs before drawing up a shortlist. Owing to the size and weight of most models of 4-wheeler, shipping costs can often add significantly to the overall price and, as such, place some items outwith your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ATV and how does it work?

A 4-wheeler is a gas or electric-powered all-terrain vehicle (ATV) designed for a wide variety of different uses, including racing, farming, recreation, hunting, ranching, military, and industrial. The term 4-wheeler is used to distinguish these vehicles from other ATVs that use three, six, or—less commonly—eight wheels. 4-wheelers typically run on gas or diesel but in recent years a number of electric models have appeared on the market. Designed for use in more rugged terrain, they use low-pressure tires to enhance the driver’s control of the vehicle and, for the most part, use controls similar to those found on a motorcycle.

What is the difference between a quad and an ATV/4-wheeler?

The terms ‘quad’ and ‘4-wheeler’ are generally used interchangeably, although many manufacturers these days are apt to call even their three-wheeled vehicles ‘quads.’

What does CC mean for ATVs?

“CC” stands for cubic centimeters and refers to the volume of all the engine’s cylinders. While the CC measurement isn’t the only determiner of the power of any vehicle, it is one of the most important contributing factors as larger capacity allow more air and fuel into the vehicle’s engine, which in turn provide more power.

Are all ATVs 4-wheel drive?

No. Most youth 4-wheelers and budget models are only 2-wheel drive. 4-wheel drive is a very useful function because it increases control of the vehicle in rough terrain but models of 4-wheeler with 4-wheel drive typically cost doubles the price of those with only 2-wheel drive.
