Who Should Buy an ATV Helmet
If you’ve got an ATV, you need an ATV helmet! As well as providing protection from head injuries if you do fall off, helmets help to provide eye protection, as well as reducing noise from the wind rushing pas you at speed. Even if you have a motorcycle helmet, it’s best to use a helmet that’s been specifically designed for use with ATVs due to the extra protection they offer.
Many states require you to wear a helmet when riding an ATV, so it makes sense to choose one which is specifically designed for off-road riding. ATV helmets usually offer full-face protection, with a chin guard designed to protect a high level of impact protection in case of a crash. They also offer more ventilation than many other helmets, with vents for your nose and mouth as well as at the sides and top of your head.
Important Features to Consider
An ATV helmet should do several things well. Here’s what to consider when selecting the best ATV helmet to fit your needs:
- Comfort. It’s essential that your ATV helmet is comfortable because otherwise you’ll be either distracted and sore when riding, or tempted not to wear it. Look for a decent amount of soft padding which sits snugly around your head without causing pressure points in a particular spot.
- Safety certification. There are 2 safety certifications which show a helmet has been approved as safe. These are known and Snell and DOT. Make sure any helmet you buy meets either one of these standards. Snell ratings are regarded as the best, as helmets that meet this standard have been rigorously tested. Not all manufacturers submit their helmets for Snell certification, but ALL helmets should meet DOT standards, also referred to as FMVSS-218.
- Face shield. If you choose to buy a visor with a face shield make sure this also meets a separate safety certification – VESC-8 or ANSI Z-87.
- Washable liner. This is a useful feature if you ride in hot climates – simply remove and wash the liner regularly to keep your helmet fresh.
- Ventilation. Most ATV helmets already offer a lot of ventilation, designed to improve the flow of cooler air into your helmet and over your head. Some vents are adjustable so you can tailor the amount of ventilation to your preference for particular conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ATV helmet?
ATV Helmets are specifically designed to be used with your ATV. While at first glance they can look pretty similar to a motorcycle helmet they do have a few important differences. ATV helmets will have a larger face opening due to the fact that they’re often designed to be used with goggles. The chin guard and visor may extend further out from the helmet in order to absorb forces from impact if you happen to fall off! ATV helmets usually have excellent ventilation as well.
What size ATV helmet do I need?
In order to measure your head and work out what size ATV helmet you need, it’s best to use a soft and flexible tape measure.
Place the tape just above your eyebrows, across the widest section of your head. Ideally the tape should be tight when taking this measurement, but you don’t want it to feel uncomfortable. Make a note of this measurement in both inches and centimeters. This measurement will correspond to the helmet sizes used by manufacturers. For example, a head circumference of 22 inches corresponds to a helmet in size 6.
Make sure you use the size chart for the specific manufacturer you’re looking at buying from because they can vary. If you’re in between sizes, it’s safest to go up one size.
How long are ATV helmets good for?
You should be able to use your ATV helmet for between 3 – 5 years before it needs replacing. Most manufacturers recommend that helmets will last for 7 years maximum. One exception is if you’d have an accident involving a head impact – in this case you should definitely invest in a new helmet even if yours look OK on the surface.
How do you know if an ATV helmet fits?
Your new helmet should fit snugly, even a little on the tight side to start with. This is because the liner will compress a little with wear. Check the cheekpads touch your face but without too much pressure. The fit between your forehead and the helmet should be snug with no gaps. When you press the chin guard, make sure it doesn’t touch your chin or nose. Once you’ve done the chin strap up, gently lean forward and see if it feels like the helmet is going to roll off. if it does – the helmet is too big!
