I had a 400 block poured with hard block to the water pump holes do that on #1 in the 10 o'clock head bolt hole. Crack was down the cylinder about 1.5 inches. Boat anchor after that.

I had the exact thing happen to me. Left a partial filled freshly machined 400SB in the basement until spring. Took it out to the garage for assembly and it was cracked in both 4 and 6 cylinders from the deck to the level of the hard block.

I had that block squared to the world, 1200 clams in 1991 dollars and it was junk. I got short of breath when I dropped it into the dumpster at work.

At the time aftermarket small blocks weren't really available for guys like me.
