i have a friend that has a 64 nova with a 418 sbc 23* power glide will be on gas. he was woundering what would be the better carb he runs a 950hp on corn and switching back to vp113 just curious what would work better thanks

Humm, another "corn" deserter? :-k After running a 950 carb on that engine I can understand why though! ;-)

IMHO, that engine is probably a good candidate for a 2 circuit 1050 Dominator >IF< he's willing to come here and learn to tune it!

whats wrong with the 950? yea he lost .2 by switching to it from vp113

There is not .2 between the 2 fuels with a similar carb, something else was wrong. In the 1/8 my 23˚ 427 ran 5.24 best with Q16, 5.28 with E85. VP 113 was a little slower, but probably would have picked up with comparable weather. On my SB2 engine E85 was only down about 15 HP, probably less once I have tuning time with it.

How about some more info on your car and engine combo, and info on the carb. Include plug heat range, timing specs, gear, converter, weight...

its a buddy's car but it weights 2500lbs, 5000 converter ,7 heat range ,40* of timing locked out. it ran 9.75 with out of the box holley 950hp on vp 113 had it converted started off at 10.54 got it down to 9.95. engine is 4.125 bore 3.875 stroke 215 pro 1s 14.5 to 1 compression solid roller

Who did the carb? We can help if you can map the calibrations, metering block exit channel, and booster passage size.

If he's set on buying something let me know, I can probably help there as well.

Just for comparison sake, I run a 412 SBC and I run a 950 hp and I picked up about a tenth in the1/8 converting to e85 with help from this forum! It's not hard but you do have to tune to your application. Good luck!

As far as the original question ... 4150 or 4500? That size engine and parts "should" be fastest with a 4500 regardless of fuel. However the ET and weight indicates only about 500HP which is the lower end of where I'd run a Dominator.

yea the engine makes more then 500 gearing is high for the car it has 32" tires and 4.88 gears shifting @6500 traps @ 6800 this next season he is going t cut it loose and change to 5.38 gear and make it run at least 7500 through traps with cam should make a huge increase thats way i am thinking a 4500 will be better just seeing what everyone on here thought

85monte_ss My race set up is close to your buddys, 75 monza, 2450, 414 cu, 4.125 by 3,875, and at 14.7 to 1, afr 227 with a dart intake and dominator on e85, 433 gears, 33 tall tire, 6000 converter, ngk-8 and on two dyno sessions a year apart this engine never liked more than 35 degrees of timing and always made more power with the dominator.

I had that exact same experience with the first 406 SBC I built back in 1988! Long stroke SBCs usually don't like timing you'd typically run in a 355. I initially ran an 850 on it but later went to a Dominator and it was quicker and faster with the larger carb.

My 434 with 18* heads doesn't like anything over 30* on methanol or 32* on C12. Above those numbers it looses power.

i will pass on that info what sucks is it is winter here so no more racing till march it sucks
