Hey Guys, I am probably going to change out my gears from 4.88 down to 3.73
Right now when it shifts it only drops to 6000. Cross the line between 6700-7000 depending on the air. What do you guys think this will do to my ET's?
Here is a little forethought.. I once shifted it at 6000 very quick shift and also shifted it at 6500 and it ran the exact same ET. So seems like the torque is there to pull it thru.. Who knows, I have the gears sitting here and nothing but a little effort in my way.. Opinions? Thoughts?

If its an auto work out the mathematical drop into the next gear. If its supposed to drop lower than what your getting then its sitting on the convertor.

It'll definitely run slower with the 3.73's.

I have not commited yet. I got busy fixing the intake gaskets ect.. So weather ended up turning around so went to hardinsburg, and Managed to pull off a win. It is the 1st one on Friday Nights for me at that track. Earned my way to three cars and got the buy, finals he had a problem and rolled thru the beams giving me the win. So it don't feel like a normal win or I just feel like crap in general. But a Win is a Win and stick some cash in the pocket.
I am now ready to put some bullets on the truck! \:D/

Jody,in the chevelle(422 sbc) I changed from a 4.88 to a 4.56 and lost over a tenth(high 6.20's) in just the 1/8 mile.Car did not like the little gear change.I went right back to a 4.88 and e.t went right back a 6 teens.Gear mutiplication is gonna be very different and the converter should or may act differently.Converter should Stall higher with a lower gear set vs. the higher..3.73 vs 4.88.I'd have to guess and I think its gonna slow at least 2 tenths just in the 1/8. Good news is,you'd be able to run it well passed the 1/4 before you run out of engine. =; But realistically you'll have to try and see to actually know. \:D/

CONGRATS ON THE WIN JODY \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ IT'S ABOUT TIME. =; Another good part about the gear change is that it will put you well within the 6.50 class \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ Also less safety gear in the heat ;-)

There have been a lot of drivers adding weight and so on so they run the 6.40's cause of it.

Jody,

Congrats on your win, and Steve is right about the safety gear.

I run a big block and make most of my power down track, but when I went from a 4.88 down to a 4.56 on a 30 tall tire I went from 7800 down to 7100 across the stripe, and never saw the 9's again after that. I also tried some different shift points, 6, 6500 and 7000 and it still hit the stripe at 8000 and then I had the vert tightened up a tad and then it went the 7800 as mentioned above. You have a small block I believe and it may do the exact same thing as mine, or not, but I am thinking like the few above that you will drop some mph and go up in the et, unless your gonna add gobbs of power like a 200+ shot of juice, then you will be flyin down track. Hope this helps out a little, and good luck.

John
