Post subject:  msd crank trigger

seems my newly acquired crank trigger has a gremlin that came free of charge. i have posted some info in the fuel section.
last the night was third time it happened. this time was at the track in the pits after a two passes. the last two times was when i was unloading the car after i got home. damn thing just does not fire.
i mean literaly take plug wire off spark plug, insert screwdriver, ground, no fire.
disconnect wire from trigger, connect back to trigger, bam, have fire. same scenario each time.
i have checked ohm readings on crank sensor two times, and both times checks withing specs.

called msd tech today and they/he seems to think it is heat issue, which i call BS on.

has anyelse had issues with their crank trigger, any help would be nice, cause it sure would really suck if it went during a run.

cause i am ready to take this POS and make a wall clock out of it.

What is your pickup gap? Should be .050-.060" (from memory).

Is it a flying magnet type - magnets in the wheel?

Are you triggering an MSD or ???

if memory serves me correct, i am using .050 gap. i originally had it wider.

That's the only setup I've run for a long time. They work great ... normally. There isn't much to them. If the wires and connections are good and the pickup checks good, then there isn't much else to be wrong with the crank trigger itself. The pickups are just a coil of wire and if the ohm reading is normal then its good.

Sounds more like a problem with the trigger input circuit in the 6A box. Is the white wire (point trigger input wire) on the 6A taped up so it's not grounding out etc?

pretty sure white wire is not grounded. you would think the trigger in box would have same issues with the pickup in distributor.

really have been considering steping up to a 7al3 =; . this might just be the reason to do so.

If you're looking to replace what you have, you might want to search for Crane HI6 and see what shrinker has to say about those vs an MSD ignition. FYI, he's NOT a big fan of anything that MSD currently makes.

Had an issue just like your saying..Replace the trigger..Ohm was also good on mine ](*,) ...Replaced it and worked just fine after that...
Borrow a good used one to see if you can..

called jegs this morning and explained situation going on and they said they will replace with no problem. should have a new one hopefully in a few days.


i can tell you this.after speaking with msd tech yesterday, i will be hard pressed to buy another msd product.

went through 3 msd 6 digital plus boxes in 3 years i have one they fixed under warranty still in the box, put my old 7al2 box back in and have not had a problem, running the coil for the 6 box blaster hvc2 msd said ok with 7 box just cannot go the other way around..do not want to run a coil for 7 box on a 6 box..

got a replacement pickup from jegs(actually they sent entire kit). seems to be working so far. then last week my "race" rev limiter started acting up.
i was ready to upgrade my ignition system with a 7al3 or possibly the power grid. but with the problems i have been having along with others, not sure which route to take.

i hear that shrinker really likes the crane ignition. maybe he can chime in on this.

I thought MSD stands for Many Spark Defects. If you have a connection problem etc using a Crane isnt going to fix that. Normally the MSD 6 is a good unit for what its intended to do. You need to check everything and you also need to check the MSD 6 box to make sure its a MSD not a Chinese copy. There are Chinese copy's around, they have a normal inductive ignition module inside them and there not CDI or Multiple spark.

boy, electrical is not my most favorite thing. :-({|=
