Phil I made one like this for my first digger and I've used it on everything since.  It uses a belt that is about 26 inches long.  For the adjusting mechanism, I used a straight piece of electrical conduit with a split sleeve welded on one end to attach it to the lower frame rail with hose clamps and on the other end I used a straight piece of flat steel with a slot in it welded to the conduit.  I have that same setup on the Camaro and it has worked well on everything it's been on.  The alternator is a Mitsubishi from a Mazda MPV and it also comes other Mazdas and is also found on a Ford Probe.  Don't know what that crosses to in UK but I'm sure you could find something that will work.  I've bought several of them off of fleabay.

Yeah Phil, it's 1/2 inch but I don't think I'd go any thinner than that.  In fact, 5/8 might be even better and couldn't hurt anything.

You adjust the belt center line with the thickness of the 1" round spacers.  Once you have that dimension then it's a piece of cake.  The nut on the rear of the alternator will move in the housing so the spacers don't have to be an "exact" dimension, except for the front one, which sets that alternator to crank pulley center line.

The adjustment arm/bracket, etc on mine ran from the alternator to the opposite side lower frame rail.  You do understand how I did that, don’t you?  If not, I may have a pick of the finished product.  The pic I posted doesn’t have the lower adjustment bracket on it.
