have you noticed there is no end to my questions? My digital 6 msd has a 20 degree retard for easier starting. I unhooked it- the car idles much better and still starts fine (36 total advance) so whats the point of the retard? thanks in advance, Ty

Is your distributor locked out at 36 or are you running a crank trigger?

The reason it probably idles better is because the start retard stays in until the engine gets to a certian RPM after it starts. I've heard 800 and also 1200 RPM to deactivate that retard so that probably explains that.

As far as the retards go, I've heard ppl sware by them and others swear at them! Some engines just don't like'em whereas others do.

All I can say is if there aren't any problems without it then don't use it!

With the MSD depending how you wire it you will get a retard only when cranking or if you wire it via the box it will stay retarded until it goes over 1300 rpm.

in your case (if you want the retard) run the activation wire from the solenoid feed wire, that way as soon as you stop cranking (engine run condition) it will have full spark.

I have 2 of them hanging on the wall in the shop. I also have a few flexplates with teeth missing. I quit using them and no more kick backs.
