Forward facing scoops sometimes create problems with turbulent air around the top of the carbs air bleeds and vent tubes. There's been some testing done by those here with data loggers that prove that turbulent air can be more of a disadvantage than advantage. One way to help minimize this problem is the use of an air cleaner which will help calm the air flow around the carb top.

You really need to look at form over function.... A clear scoop while looking the part of 1950's technology may not necessarily be the best medium for directing air into a carburetor. Positive RAM air is always going to be better than not having it if you can keep the air clean and with minimal turbulence. Whether you get the air from a scoop, a cowl, or air ducts can all work just a matter of how quickly and how efficiently.
