Anyone know of an inexpensive way to test for water content of methanol? :-k

My friend has a hydrometer. (sp) I think it was cheap.. We Compared the medical grade fuel, Renegade, and VP. All 3 were the same. From what I understand the water is what makes it less and less pure. This is the kit we used... http://www.utahbiodieselsupply.com/methanoltestkit.php

the cheapest way is to get one of them $14 anti water funnels =; the hydrometer is good but the specific gravity changes at different temps

The reason for this is I ran out of fuel back about 3 weeks ago and then went and bought 10 gallons from the guy I usually buy from. Since I started using that stuff I've had needle seats stick and also accelerator pump check valves and this has happened after only ONE day with fuel sitting in the carbs? I also had the relief valve in my BLP belt drive pump to stick as well? I've had a pump check valve stick before but that doesn't usually happen until fuel has been left in the carb for two weeks or more but I've NEVER, EVER had a needle seat stick before until this last batch of fuel. I had bought two drums 3 years ago from the same guy but I never had much of a problem with that.

I've still got 5 gallons of the stuff now and was wanting to test it to find out if it's got too much water in it before I said anything to him about that. :-k

methanol itself is just a weak acid , it itself is more corrosive than water.

Yeah but water makes it even MORE corrosive. As I said, this is the FIRST time EVER that I've had titanium needle seats stick and I had that happen two weeks in a row on different needle seats with this fuel batch.

Switched over to gas last week so I'm good to go until late next spring. Problem is though this guy that I got that fuel from has a 1,000 gallon bulk tank and when I was there it was still half full, which means that he'll be selling this same s**t next spring when I planed to buy two drums again. I don't think I want any more of it! I may just have to go back to Dominion Chemical in Petersburg, Va to get their 99.9% pure methanol. It's more expensive and I also have to buy my own lube but hey, it's the PURE stuff!

Ken I don't remember the actual percentage but I do remember the number was the same. We kinda of came up with the Renegade and VP are cleaner fuels. Not sure really. The car ran the same either way. I do know that the Renegade is the only one between the 3 that even say 99.9% pure.
The VP and the odd brand just say Methanol.. So that was another question really.

I guess that's my bad then because it was my understanding that it was the other way round, AND, the fuel I was running very well may have had more water in it than what I just bought? :-k But this has been since I started running methanol way back around 1995 or so and I can't remember the stuff sticking up needle seats and such like this last batch has? :-k

Maybe I need to pour a quart of water in it then, hey! ;-)

Thanks for the info KY!

How much water is too much? Whats acceptable? And what do you do if your alky tests out with too much water? "Enquiring minds want to know!" I am just getting started running alky.

I think its more likely that there is a petroleum added to the methanol. Some of them gum and when it dries out with the needle seated it sticks. Its common to add acetone to prevent water absorbtion to methanol and when they do that it dries to a jelly or a gum.

I will share that I had not ran any top lube all season... I bought a new drum and put some lube in it and I had the barrel valve stick 2 times on me and leak... There is a cap on the back of the valve with a snap ring and an o-ring. This is where it leaked. I blame that on the top lube as well...
