The plan is to mount my engine on the dyno this Saturday. Monday, we'll make some pulls to assess general condition, ie how much power did it loose over 325 passes?
Then we are going to work on a 540 E85 calibration, 2 circuit.
Then we'll freshen it for the coming seasons.

I've got to get this puppy apart to see what has to be replaced besides rings, springs and lifters. Then there's the Carb Challenge and PRI. The new season will be here before I know it..

I spent all day yesterday on the dyno, mostly as a neophyte operator. It was my engine and we learned a few things
Anyways, it's down 60HP after three years and 325 passes.

Seems like down alot of power for only 325 passes.. Anyway what's your plans for the freshen up?? I know you had talked about pistons so a bore in planed? What else...... We had talked about E85 for you but I remember you said you have epoxy in the heads...

I also wondered if his ET/MPH numbers backed that up? Crew Chief Pro will give you "estimated" HP numbers for the MPH and weather data you plug in.

We used the same dyno. While the compression numbers are good leakdown is way more than I expected. 8% plus in 6 clyinders and 12+ in two others. Mark has a borescope so I've snaked that down all cylinders. I'm not seeing bore wear I expected in the two low cylinders. And there are no nicks I could see on the valves. My guess is the rings. I had an oil sample done locally that showed more iron, lead, and aluminum than samples from previous engines. Some investigation needs to be done.
So the plan is that if the bores and pistons are in good shape we'll just put a different ring package, lifters, and bearings in it along with the other stuff that needs to be replaced. I'm on the original valve springs. There were no marks on the pistons reliefs and dyno testing showed no signs of the valve train being out of control. I really don't want to mess with this combo, just freshen it.
I do have some epoxy in the intake but, I figured 5 or 6 pulls wouldn't hurt. However, we just ran out of time after 14 pulls. I got it off the pump Wednesday so it's rebuild time.

That is not bad for an engine with that many runs and time. I feel the time sitting in the garage or trailer through each winter is as hard on an engine as running it all season. No matter how hard you try to stop it is is going to corrode in many places.... You might have picked up a little power with fresh springs & leak might have become better. It is funny how engines respond to fresh springs.

Adger, I noticed on a previous engine that after the engine sat for a while, the first oil sample would show elevated levels of iron. After which, that would level off. I'm assuming that would be the result of bore rust. Since then I've never let my car sit in the trailer. Gets put into the garage the next morning.
I'm using the springs that came with the AFR heads. I had to set them up as they were really loose from the factory.
