The 2011 Engine Masters Challenge is next week. Randy (Randy355) and I have been watching the past results every year with interest always thought it would be fun to try to build one. Randy decided he wanted to enter this year and I couldn't say no to helping. We are currently shown on the entry list under Randy's name but our team name is "Show-Me Power" since we're all from Missouri and it is the "Show-Me" state.

He built a cast iron headed 383sbc with assistance from me and an engine shop with a dyno near St. Louis. We've had it on the dyno a few times trying to tweak as much power as possible. We think it should do well, but all dynos are different so we don't know how we will do at the contest on their dyno. We'll see how a couple of backyard amateurs compare to the pro's.

Watch for the results next week. Here is a link to the main EMC website where they should post links to daily results updates. Links to the rules etc are shown on that page too. We are in the street class which is scored based on 2500-6500 rpm torque and power.

Good luck. I am envious. That is a really interesting competition. I have tried to follow the results over the last few years. Its a tough competition.

Thanks Barry, with a little luck we hope to make the finals on Friday. and no nitro is not legal. VP 100 street unleaded is the spec fuel. I'm guessing they won't let us anywhere near the fuel tank. =;

The engine is a 383 sbc stroker (4.030" x 3.75") 5.7" rods, 11.4 CR (must be <11.5) with Vortec Bowtie heads and 2.08 valves, Motown intake, Braswell carb (rules say throttle bore max <= 1.690"). Comp Roller Cam 236/248 .640" gross lift (rules say < .650" w/no lash). Jesel belt drive. Randy did the porting on the heads and intake spending more hours than I can imagine testing and grinding then epoxying. We tried several different intakes, several cams a couple headers.

Peak HP is over 620 at 6500rpm. It takes WOT at full load on the dyno down below 2000rpm and starts the pull at WELL over 400ft/lbs at 2500 rpm. We'll see Monday how we score on the EMC dyno.

Rick did you contact Doug or Dave at Braswell for the carb? I'd be interested in the specs on that for sure! ;-)

Don't know if you guys noticed but Dave joined here a few weeks back but he hasn't posted anything? :-k

You're gonna be up against some really stiff competition! Hasn't John Kaase won this thing several times in recent years?

Ennywho, you guys "kick some ass" and if you win it, I guess I'll have to get a larger monitor to go with your head size afterwards. ;-)

Oh, and remember Adger Smith is one of the inspectors and he's a member here. Maybe you could bribe him? O:) =;

Well, it's all over for us now. The top 3 teams in each class pull off Friday for the finals. We finished 5th place in the street class. Our official score was 2394.2 and 4th was 2394.5 even 2nd place was only 17pts away at 2411, but 1st (at least as far as qualifying) was at 2470 (S.A.M. - School of Automotive Machinists) using a Ford with CHI heads on it. Not quite a fair fight with the 23º iron vortec bowtie.

We got the privilege of meeting Adger Smith (we never could get him to take that bribe during tech) and dieselgeek as well as some other engine builders. Lots of fun and interesting.

For the Extreme class the top qual is Bischoff, then McKeown and then S.A.M. Kaase was in 5th place.

Thanks Barry for the links. Their site is not very user friendly.

Congratulations Randy and Rick even if you didn't win. As long as you had fun, that's what these hobbies are all about. That and it's not often that you get to play with the "big boyz"! ;-)

Oh, and you need to check your numbers as that 2311 isn't 17 points away? At least not the way I read it. Should that be 2411 and 2470? :-k

Yes ken I had the top ones at 23xx and edited them to the correct numbers at 24xx. I think the numbers in my previous post should be correct now.
