I have BBC with a Moroso pan. The pan is rated at 6 qts + the filter. I use the short Wix racing filter that holds about 1/2 qt. The engine has oil restrictors to the topend and a Mellings HV pump. The math says 6 1/2 qts. Would I be safe running less oil to move the level away from the crank to reduce windage?

Dont run it low with a HV pump. That pump can suck the pan dry. (maybe not with restrictors though) Just because your dipstick said its full or overfull doesnt mean its at that level going down track. I bet there is only a few litres in there at higher rpm. The oil is probably not even close to the crank. A windage tray would be mutch better than running it low on oil. I would also remove the restrictors to get more oil to the springs, rockers and lifters.

I've heard running low oil level has been an old Stock or Super Stock trick for picking up a hundredth or two when desperate. It might gain a very small bit of ET or MPH, but for bracket racing it certainly seems like a big risk for a very small reward.

I have to agree with rick. High risk low reward.
