Thanks Garett, do I win the ugly car contest?

OK, I gota say running that car was kind of an accident. I built an engine for a truck that didn't end up in the truck. I bought the nova just cause I found it cheep. Then my son talked me into putting the truck engine in that car. One thing lead to another, and next thing you know I had it at the track. We chased et the rest of the year, and got a 7.44 1/8 out of it.(2900 lb)

Then we wondered just how low of ET could be had with such simple engine parts. So out came the engine, for a few changes, and the next year a 7.30 first night out. Then a roll cage requirement added 100+ lbs. and it took the rest of the year to get it back to the 7.30s.

Then last winter, some more changes, and about 50 lbs out of it, and it ran a 7.036 at 95.30 mph on the pass in that pic, with a 1.525 60', last sunday.

Can this engine combo, run a 6.99 or better, in a 2950 lb car?

4.03" bore x 3.48" stroke 355" SBC
750 carb
Performer rpm intake
882 casting smog heads
9/1 compression, on 87 octain
hyperuexplosive flat top pistons
204*/214* @.050" hydraulic flat tappet cam .420"/.443" lift.
Stock 2 bolt block/bottom end
stock pan, no windage work yet

When it runs a 6.99, maybe then it gets painted. =;

Randy, you are going like us. A little more each year. 60' is good. Speed seems down. We normally run 97-98 mph at that ET. I think you are close to 6.99. What kind of oil and how much do you run? If you want to make a change and spend some money I recommend the heads or cam or both. Good luck. \:D/  \:D/  \:D/  \:D/  \:D/  \:D/

I guess you missed what I was asking. Can an engine with that simple of parts, run a 6.99 in a 2950lb car? In other words, SAME CAM/SAME HEADS/SAME INTAKE/SAME PISTONS AND COMPRESSION.

I know different heads, and cam would speed it up, and if all I wanted to do was go in the sixes, I'd put my 331" back in, or build a decent bracket engine.
Look at it like the rules confine you to that cam/heads etc, how fast can it go?
Once it runs a 6.99, I'll take the engine out, and do something else.

I'm running 4 QTs Mobil 1 0w-20w oil.

Gotcha.  =;  Your close. a change in Air Density or even a Jet change could put you in the 6.90's We went from a 6.93 to a 6.90 by going down 3 numbers on the rear jets.

Why did you change just the rear jets?

We pulled the plugs to change them and they were black. We figured it was because of all the idling and the Carb testing. a couple of weeks prior. I checked the plugs after 2 passes on the new plugs (6.94, 6.93) and they were black again. A couple of weeks earlier I bumped them (The back Jets) up due to the cooler weather.

Shift at 6000, go thru the traps at 6500.

us7race wrote:

Powerglide trans, Boss hog converter, rated at 2800-3200 rpm, but stalls 4700-4800 rpm.

Try shifting earlier, and take a little gear out of it, 4.88 or 5.13.  I think 6000 and 6500 are out of the power band of that cam and heads, that's why the mph is down.  That combo should make good torque, get it in high gear and let it pull.  i'm impressed it runs that good but think 6.90's are definately in reach.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
